Communication Design: The curriculum

The study program Communication Design (B.A.) shapes individuals for a future as a creative. Communication Designers can deploy their knowledge within many branches of the economy as well as in state institutions.

As the field of Graphic Design has undergone lasting changes in the past decade, the degree course is multidisciplinary and reaches far beyond text and picture composition. It further deals with the invention of new pictorial worlds for different tasks through photography, motion design, infographic and apps for mobile telephones or tablet-PCs.

The state-accredited bachelor’s degree program in Communication Design at UE – University of Art & Design gives you all the conceptual, design, and technical competencies you need for working in the real world. This mix of international and German design culture and tradition stands for a progressive education in line with the times. A diverse range of inspiration and influence awaits you, as well as an international student body, dedicated faculty, and the most exciting city in Europe for design: Berlin!

During your general studies, you will first learn the basic knowledge and skills needed for the field. You will receive a solid foundation in disciplines such as painting, drawing, typography, layout, photography, and animation. The visual skills you will gain range from simple scribbles to complex animations. History and theory of design likewise create an academic basis for your studies in Communication Design.

Starting in your 2nd semester, you can choose to focus on your own specific subjects within the compulsory modules. Editorial Design, Advertising Design, Ads and Sequencing, or Corporate Identity are just a few seminars that you can choose from.

These are enhanced with interdisciplinary seminars from the areas of Photography (English), Motion Design, Illustration, Game Design, or Interaction Design. In these, you learn to master projects on both a concept and a design level.

A mandatory, 21-week internship awaits you in the third phase of your studies. It serves to give you start in your future career in the professional world. As an alternative, you can choose to complete a semester abroad. The Laureate International Network offers special options and support.

For your 7th semester, you as a bachelor’s degree candidate will apply your newfound knowledge by realizing your own concepts and sophisticated projects. This is the best business card you could ever have for presenting yourself and your work to your preferred or future employer.

UE offers the hands-on, future-oriented Communication Design program of study at all three campuses: in Berlin, Hamburg, and Iserlohn. Previous degrees or achievements can be accepted; thus, you have the option of beginning your studies at UE in an advanced semester.
