Course Content
This intensive workshop will combine studio visits to working professional Photographers and Artists, gallery and museum tours focusing on contemporary and historical photography, a one day Collodion Wetplate Workshop where the students will learn the 1860’s Collodion wetplate techniques, shoot with a late 1800’s large format camera, and make both an ambrotype and tintype photographic work. Students will also have 5 mornings of seminar instruction, weekly personal meetings for feedback on what they shoot and most importantly, they will have free time to shoot in Berlin 24/7. Darkroom facilities are available for those shooting with analogue cameras.
The Program will include 24 hours of class lectures, 16 hours for studio shooting, 10 hours of analogue and digital darkroom instruction, 10 hours site specific museum or professional studio/gallery visits, 12 hours of collodion wetplate technique instruction, 38 hours of guided location shooting.
Objectives
Our goals and objectives with the BTK Summer Photography Program are to offer students of photography the unique opportunity to work on developing their personal photography style with professional feedback and inspiring theoretical discussions and practical workshops in the open and friendly atmosphere of our university and backdrop of the exciting capital city, Berlin.
Who is this course addressed to?
The workshop is designed and geared toward current students of either analogue or digital photography.
Methodology
The BTK Summer Photography Program will combine a mixture of theoretical lessons, field trips, cultural visits, and practical workshops.
Course Coordinator
James Higginson
Summer workshop leader and coordinator-AVONBIEHL studio for photography and video. James Higginson, provocative, contemporary American artist/photographer/film maker, now working in Berlin, will coordinate and design a special Photography Program for the BTK Summer Session. Higginson has exhibited his artworks internationally and held seminar/workshop programs for the University of East London, HGB-Leipzig, FOTO K-Vienna, and Fatamongana-Copenhagen.

Kash Gabriele Torsello
Visiting Guest Photographer August 9th – 10th
is an Italian freelance photojournalist and an independent publisher. He has been following the Kashmir conflict since 1994 and was abducted in Helmand Province, while documenting Afghanistan in 2006. Kash's work has been published internationally and held seminars and talks on Human Rights and Freedom of the Press. He his the author & publisher of The Heart of Kashmir and Afghanistan CameraOscura. He is the founder and director of the ProPugliaPhoto Agency located in the south of Italy.

Visiting Guest Photographer August 20th – 23rd
Lifestyle and culture photographer in a documentary style. His lifestyle projects stand in the tradition of spontaneous and emotional 35mm documentary photography, using a variety of alternative processes including the Wet Plate Collodion Process, dating back to 1851. He combines the slow, time consuming old fashioned technique with a young mind, a lot of energy and a rather modern approach. Jan will join James Higginson at AVONBIEHL for the Collodion Wetplate portion of the Workshop.
